My favorite Roast Beef Sandwich, Con Pane

Every now and then we have to get away from the ranch. Our favorite drive is over the Ortega Highway into San Juan Capistrano and then down the Pacific Coast Highway south to San Diego. It’s a long drive, but the ocean view and ocean air make the drive irresistible.

So off we went on our adventure on Saturday. I was looking forward to stopping off at our favorite bakery in San Diego and then heading out to Pt. Loma cliffs to enjoy a picnic lunch. We headed to Con Pane, A Rustic Bakery. We’ve been going for years! We even had them at the weddings of our daughters their breads are so good. As we approach the bakery, I notice there’s no line. Wait, there’s always a line, especially at this time of day. What? They’re gone!

Now I panic. Quickly go to my iPhone and google their name. Con Pane, A Rustic Bakery… wait there it is, they’ve moved! Phew that was close. I didn’t want to believe they had become a victim to this economy. Thank goodness they hadn’t. They have chosen to move a bit north, closer to the action. They’ve moved to Liberty Square! Liberty Square has been developing for over five years. It is a hot spot for commerce, museum, a beautiful park and just strolling long soaking in the rich history of the area.

You can now find this 5 star bread bakery at the corners of Dewey and Historic Decatur at Liberty Station in the Pt Loma area of San Diego. Just go the way you used to go down Rosecrans, just when you see the Ralph’s turn in and head down to Historic Decatur. Go North on Historic Decatur to Dewey. You’ve found it. They have gorgeous ceiling lamps and the same counter as the old location. Just about 5 times larger!

AS you can tell from the photo of my sandwich, and the photo of the full case, Con Pane knows their bread. Most Yelp reviewers give them 4 to 5 stars. I’d always give them 5. We’ve never been disappointed by their offerings. In fact they have the best PB&J ever. Their open face “grilled” cheese is so fabulous. My fave, is the roast beef with goat cheese and red onion on their Kalamata olive bread. Do not skip the chocolate brioche on the weekends either!

Went to college at Point Loma Nazarene University and for four years spent any extra cash I had on their turkey cobb sandwiches and excellent coffee. Miss that place and can’t wait to visit sometime!

Um YUM! The only thing preventing my just going ahead and licking the screen is that I just had lunch, a fairly tasty sandwich of my own, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t that good.

It’s so nice now. Room for everyone to sit down. Lots of viewing space for watching the bakers at work, and all their lovely offerings!

Oh! The new digs look fabulous! I could go for just about anything on in that bread case. Delicious!
